2009 Lexus IS 220d Photos
Lexus Europe's press release about the new IS 250 C Convertible also included some information regarding the Europe-only 2009 IS 220d:
Refreshed interior and exterior styling represents a further evolution of Lexus’ unique L-finesse design philosophy. Modifications to suspension, steering, transmissions and paddle shift technology offer notable improvements to driving dynamics. Aerodynamics and transmission enhancements have reduced the IS 220d’s CO2 emissions by 3%, and by 8% for the Sport version.
Also attached were some extremely large photos of the upcoming 2009 IS facelift (220d edition) -- in fact, they're so large, I've made an impromptu image gallery:

Does all of that text apply to IS220d? "Paddle shift technology" implies it will be available with an automatic, which would be welcome, but I will assume it is slightly out of context.
Allow me to answer myself, the new Avensis is rumored to become available with a 2.2diesel+automatic (Toyota's first d+a in this class) This 2.2 is a low power version of the 177hp in the current IS220d so maybe an automatic will be in the IS220d as well?

Sorry about that, Pond. The software running my site has been giving me no end of grief and I'm not getting comment notifications any more.
I have a feeling that if the IS 220d was going to be offered in automatic, the press release would have been more explicit, especially as you mention it would be a first for Toyota.
Let's see if I can dig up a definite answer.
No criticism intended :)
You are probably right, the Avensis is FWD so they wouldn't share transmission anyway.
