2010 Lexus RX 350 & RX 450h Details
Lexus has issued their press release with details on the new 2010 RX 350 & 450h, which backs up the specifications and options I posted last month. Here’s some selected passages from the press release:

Entering its second generation, the RX 450h will feature an enhanced Lexus Hybrid Drive system with a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine that runs on a highly efficient Atkinson cycle. Combined with a new, more efficient inverter, the total system output will be 295 horsepower, 27 more horsepower than the current generation RX hybrid.
Another step in the Lexus Hybrid Drive’s evolution is the addition of two new systems that improve its efficiency. The first is an exhaust-heat recovery system that reduces engine warm-up time allowing it to stop earlier, more often, and for longer periods. The result is an improvement in both fuel economy and emissions. The second is a cooled exhaust-gas recirculation system that reduces engine pumping losses, which also helps to improve economy.
The RX 450h features a front-wheel hybrid drive or an electronically driven, part-time all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid drive system, which supplies the rear wheels with the optimal amount of torque as conditions demand. Unlike mechanical AWD systems that reduce fuel efficiency via added weight and friction, the RX 450h’s rear-mounted electric motor-generator allows all four wheels to perform regenerative braking, charging the hybrid battery more effectively.

The third generation RX 350 will be powered by an improved 275-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to an electrically controlled, sequential-shift six-speed transaxle. The all-wheel-drive version will feature an Active Torque Control AWD system that optimizes torque depending on driving conditions, resulting in improved efficiency and performance.

The all-new RX models possess a number of Lexus-first technologies that enhance the ownership experience. An available Hard Disk Drive (HDD) navigation system has an all-new “Remote Touch” controller that is both intuitive and ergonomic. Positioned on the center console, Remote Touch is as natural to the driver’s hand as a computer mouse. It can also be customized to the desired level of haptic feedback. While RX will feature voice recognition as standard, the new navigation system will also include a new casual language voice-recognition system that acknowledges conversational commands. Standard XM® satellite-radio capability (requires subscription) is joined by XM NavTraffic and new NavWeather features.

The “display zone” assists the driver via an eight-inch, navigation display that is set back in the dash for improved visibility. A white Organic LED multi-informational display ensures exceptional readability from a wide angle. An optional Heads-up Display reduces the need for excessive eye movement, and the use of high-intensity LEDs make the display bright enough to be read in direct sunlight.
All in all, I’m impressed with the progression, particularly with the extremely modern interior, though I share the common opinion that the exterior design wasn’t pushed far enough. One thing to keep in mind is the need for balance and continuity, after all, the RX is Lexus’ best selling model.
There’s a lot to absorb, a ton of pictures and information to go through, and I’m going to give it some thought before I make a final decision. I can say this, I’ve seen both the heads-up display and the Remote Touch controller in action, and it was the first time I ever really wanted an RX.

I am so bummed there is no third row. I thought there was to be a third row “stretch” version, a la Highlander???

@Dan/WoL: I was shown a dealership video of the HUD and Remote Touch controller in action a few weeks ago — under strict orders not to share it on my site. Sorry about the confusion!

interior looks really nice and personalized.
rear end is okay, not too bad.
front end…
wow, has to go.
i wouldnt spend my money on it, if i were a at-home dad, taking my kids to soccer practice, then hitting the country club.

Thanks, another speculation about the new interface is that this is the only way they will allow input while vehicle is in motion.
For some reason, they think that touchscreen will completely disorient the driver….

I can’t find Lexus’ auto show website, and they didn’t post their debut video…Where did you guys see the new Lexus nav in action? It has been years, and I’ve finally had a chance to go the LA Auto Show…this Saturday!!! Hopefully, there won’t be a crowd playing with the extra systems on display at the Lexus booth (;

I really interested in the remote touch. It looks like one of the best car interface around. This should of been what I-Drive was like. Leave it to lexus

I haven’t seen the video footage of the Remote Touch or the HUD, features I am VERY interested in…

@DrFill
The LF-X (I’m assuming that’s the one you are talking about) could be a sport SUV for Lexus in the future. The RX is the family SUV for those who don’t need the seven seats of the GX (which will most likely get an update very soon). The LF-X can fill its own category, as a Sport SUV like the X5. Think of it like the ES vs. GS, both are relatively the same size, not huge difference except for performance and aggressive looks. So the LF-X could be a great sport SUV but it would have been to radical for an RX update

@krew
How does the remote touch differ from BMW/MB’s iDrive?
can you believe that one will be able to input commands faster than their touch screen system?
November 25th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
@Scott: The RX remains a five-seater, so two rows.
@Kev: I can’t imagine anything really being faster than a touch screen interface, but from the video footage I’ve seen, this Remote Touch functions every bit like a mouse.
In thinking about the change from touchscreen to controller, the reasoning must be the increased distance between the driver and the LCD and finer selection control.

Well, how many rows???

Nothing groundbreaking, but at least RX is no longer as outdated tech wise. It’s too bad the price and mileage, two things most people really care about, are still mysteries.

What a dissapointment… I wanted to buy my RX450h but this is now a very ugly car… It looks like a cheap Daewoo…
January 2nd, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Ok, I think that might be taking it a little far.

javier!!!!ty!!!! i saw a Daewoo and i kept trying to remember the name and now i did!!!thank you.
my opinion on the RX is that in an attempt to make it more “manly” they mucked up the headlights…the headlights should have been thicker, or what i would have loved is if it were a duo-healight like the old LX.that has luxury written all over it.
