Lexus RX 400h Sales Growing in United Kingdom

Although no exact numbers are mentioned, The Auto Channel is reporting that Lexus RX 400h sales have increased in the UK by 28% over last July, which is especially impressive given the current SUV climate in the country:
That [28%] growth stands in stark contrast to the fortunes of rival luxury brands, which suffered an average decline of 30 per cent in SUV sales.
And for some famous names, new registrations have tumbled by as much as 50 per cent.
Lexus attributes the strong showing to the hybrid engine, which sneaks the RX 400h into a lower tax band.
Commenting on the results, Belinda Poole, Lexus GB Director, said: "The RX 400h is the first and remains the only hybrid SUV on the market.
"In what is a tough market overall, this gives our Lexus Centres a great advantage in being able to offer the type of car customers want, but without the penalties in running costs they would incur with models from rival brands."
I would have thought that the hybrid RX was simply cannabilizing sales from its conventional petrol-engine twin, but the RX 400h was dominating in 2007, making up 86% of all RX model sales in Europe.
It's going to be interesting to see how the upcoming RX redesign affects the momentum, but it's clear the hybrid crossover is already the brand's #1 model in Europe.

Lexus LF-A Engine on display at London Motor Show
Even if there's nothing really new to look at, this Car Magazine video clip of the London Motor Show does feature the LF-A's engine suspended in glass:
Looks smaller than I would expect.
Lexus Europe 2008 YTD Sales

Lexus Europe have reported their 2008 January to June sales, and the result is very similar to the US numbers. For the first six months of the year, 24,859 vehicles have been sold, a 14% decrease from last year.
The press release also mentions that 35% of all Lexus' sold in Europe are hybrids, which is down from 37% last year. (Hardly a significant drop, but it's worth mentioning.)
In addressing the drop in sales, the Toyota press release included a very interesting quote:
‘2008 has been challenging as we prepare for a new product offensive and face tougher external pressures,’ said Tadashi Arashima, President and Chief Executive Officer of TME. ‘We are confident of entering a new phase of growth in-line with the introduction of 18 models, including two hybrids, to Europe. Each model will bring improved fuel efficiency, helping to expand our low CO2 sales mix.’
With eighteen new models (!!!) about to be introduced, it looks like Toyota/Lexus is about to begin a major offensive in Europe.

The Fonz & The Lexus Hybrid

The Fonz is trading in his motorcycle for a Lexus RX 400h, as Henry Winkler is making his way across Britain on a children's book tour to support the government's 2008 National Year of Reading:
Winkler, world famous for his role as "The Fonz" in the hit television show Happy Days., is now the author of a best-selling series of children's novels about a boy called Hank Zipzer, the World's Greatest Underachiever. Winkler based Hank on his own experiences as a boy with dyslexia.
The tour kicked off on 30 June and will continue until 10 July. First News and Winkler are visiting 11 schools* during their tour and stopping off at branches of W.H. Smith in Kingston upon Thames, Birmingham and Manchester along the way, where Winkler will be signing copies of his books.
I'll be honest, I had no idea that Winkler was a successful children's author, but I do know that this is my second "Celebrity drives hybrid in Britain" story today, and that definitely counts for something.

Paul McCartney's Lexus LS 600h Spotted

Considering the furor it created, I had fully expected the LS 600hL gift that Lexus airfreighted to Paul McCartney would never see the light of day. However, Sir Paul was recently spotted being chauffeured around London in the dark maple red hybrid. Also of note:
Such is vegetarian Sir Paul's passion for issues surrounding animal rights and the environment that he took out the leather interior and had it replaced with cloth.
The singer demanded that no animal products were used in his new car and it has been fitted with a hand-stitched green woven fabric.
Lexus said of the decision to send the vehicle by plane: 'To ensure the car's quality and security, as well as to meet marketing deadlines, it was airshipped on a regularly-scheduled commercial flight to the UK.'
Ok, enough of about that. I feel like a gossip columnist.

Top Gear builds a Lexus LS 400 Police Car
Top Gear was in top form for the start of their eleventh season last night, turning a very entertaining episode that managed to squeeze a '93-'94 Lexus LS 400 into their first challenge of the year. Each presenter had to choose a sub-£1000 used car that could replace the Vauxhall Astra as the British Police car. Hilarity ensues:
I wonder if James May was influenced by Tom Ford's modification of the LS 400 for his Fifth Gear review of the LS 460?
